Interview with David Blandy - The Lost Bay Podcast
While you snag ECO MOFOS!! on our webstore you can get a listen to the latest TLB podcast episode with David Blandy. David is a unique creative spirit. He’s done it all, from playing in a band as a teenager, writing, playing RPGs, to studying fine art and becoming a sculptor and visual artist. He went back to RPGs to take a break from screens and play pen and paper games with his children. In this episode we talk about his journey as a creator, and how his work as an artist informs game design. We also discussed Weirdhope, a unique genre of his own creation that teaches us that we can find joy and meaning, even in a strange and at times harsh world.

Classification

I’m a film buff, always have been. When I was a teenager I jumped on the car whenever my veteran grandpa went to the local home depot, a storage facility on the edges of the Suburb called “Chains”. For some reason, the owner of the store had a small video rental section filled mostly with horror, noir, sci-fi, and other genre flicks. Rental prices were pretty exorbitant, but the dude offered huge discounts whenever I rented something. Ì loved watching arthouse black and white movies, but especially B and Z movies. And one thing that filled me with excitement were the opening credits. Studio intros, title sequences and the film rating logos. As a tribute to the 70s to 90s B movies era, we made our own Classification system. It contains four non-exhaustive ratings: Slasher, Gross, Chiller, Eerie. Third party TLB designers are encouraged to use them in their zines to indicate what readers can expect.

If you’ve read the Quickstart and the adventure included in it, the Hollow Hitchhiker, you’ve gotten a sense of how exploration pointcrawl procedures are structured in The Lost Bay. This week I’ve been drafting expanded descriptions of the districts and various Urban Legends that you might stumble across. I won’t reveal much before the book is finished, but I wanted to give you a little taste of what’s expected. It’s an early draft, unedited, pardon me if it’s Frenchified.
Visions of the Bay
The Destruction that Whispered to the Void, comic
Vomitive Decomposition and Penny Melgarejo have released a dark and eerie comic with a strong metal touch: The Destruction that Whispered to the Void. The large format book printed on beautiful uncoated paper features stark contrast illustrations and spreads of wild graphical exuberance. It will take you on a trip that could very well be the nightmare of a Lost Bay denizen. Penny is also active in the RPG scene and on my “illustrators watch list” https://linktr.ee/pennymelgarejo
Lakeview Cabin Collection, videogame
I played Lakeview Cabin when it was first released (was it a free Flash game?) It’s a 2D scrolling puzzle/survival game with a 80s slasher feel. Pixelated blood and screams. As I was looking for it on the web, I stumbled across the trailer for the Lake Cabin collection, and it looks like since the first release they turned it into a mini franchise and released six games. It looks so dope!
The Pareidolist, Vibe trifold
The tribe of The Lost Bay third party creators keeps growing, and this week Overwhelming_Dog has released a new Vibe for TLB: The Pareidolist, whose powers revolve around faces, so many faces, so many! Design and writing are tight, and the art is fantastic. Go get it, it’s PWYW https://overwhelming-dog.itch.io/pariedolist
Kripke County Residential Listing, 1992-93 [MISPRINT], zine
The coolest name generator, aka a d10,000 table of names based on the most popular US names of the 1990 census! Symbolic City has blessed us with a humongous 72 page module that actually looks like a 199X misprinted phone book. They announced a couple of days ago in The Lost Bay server that they might print it! How cool is that? https://symboliccity.itch.io/kripke-misprint
Sleep, audio
You probably already know the Canadian post-rock band Goodspeed you Black Emperor. If not press play. If you already know it, do as I do, go back to it again and again
Today’s newsletter contributors are Chris Airiau, Wren the Forrester and Iko!
Say hi to Wren!
Hey y’all, I’m Wren the Forrester! I’m a writer and TTRPG designer who has long been a fan of both the game and setting of The Lost Bay. Recently I’ve been working with Iko on the soon-to-be-released Winter in the Bay, a setting supplement and Urban Legend set in a version of the Bay that’s trapped in a (near) eternal winter.
Eager to do more with the Lost Bay community, I’ve joined up with the The Lost Bay Studio crew to help out with writing these newsletters. So expect to see me around more in the future!
That’ll be all for today, we all need to get black to the basement where we’re conspiring to organize All Flesh is Surplus. We’ll tell you everything about it in a couple of weeks, keep your eyes peeled, or come and chat with us on the discord server.
